| The Tokyo Contemporary Art Gallery Meeting was founded in 1991 by 10galleries in the Ginza and Kyobashi districts with the purpose of layingthe foundations of contemporary art in Japan. Since 1993, the galleries haveheld the exhibition "Focusing on a New Generation -- Statements From Galleries" jointly and broadened their role by sponsoring symposia on various issues of art and showing works by Japanese and German artists in Tokyo and Aachen, among other activities. Consistently from the start, on every occasion, we have pointed out the poor public support to contemporary art in Japan and sought people's understanding of the role that galleries like ours have played in the field of contemporary art. To create a better environment for art, not only artists and galleries but also people who understand and support it are essential. We hope to convey our thought to as many people as possible who would understand and support us. As in the previous exhibitions, the 9th edition of "Focusing on a New Generation" this year consists of simultaneous solo exhibitions by 10 galleries, each featuring an artist of 40 or under. Through their serious work, we would like to shed light on current problems of our society and see a bright future. We believe art has such power. During the exhibition period, we hold a symposium inviting Mohri Yoshitaka, Shirakawa Yoshio and Ohmaki Shinji as panelists. We would like to express our gratitude to the Asahi Culture Foundation, which provided a grant to this exhibition. We extend to you all our cordial welcome to the exhibition.
