Project outline

Chief editors of major art magazines from Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan meet together in Japan to
envisage the future of art journalism in Asia. We welcome the growing interest in Asian art in the
wake of many occasions to introduce Chinese art not only in the West but also in Korea and Japan.
In the meantime, it is possible that many art lovers and individual investors alike are missing the
essential link between contemporary art and society, blinded by the soaring prices that give the
public an image of artwork as luxurious merchandise. How is journalism trying to capture the
significance of contemporary art in a historical framework? We intend to consider the restructuring
of Asian contemporary art from an art-journalistic viewpoint. Editors-in-chief from these countries
will talk about their respective policies and guidelines using slides, in a symposium style.
How art magazines, specialized in art, can contribute to the educational and social cause including
the diffusion of art in general art fans and readers ? Differences and similarities between the cultural
situations of Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan will be examined.
